The highest point of the Transalpina road (DN67C), at about 2,145 metres in the Parâng mountains, the highest paved road in Romania. Open only in summer; bring warm clothes, and expect fog and grazing sheep on the road.
At 2,145 m, Urdele Pass is the highest point of the Transalpina (DN67C), which links Novaci with Sebeș and is 148 km long in total. The road crosses the Parâng Mountains; its highest section, about 20 km long, runs close to peaks such as Păpușa (2,136 m) and Urdele (2,228 m). It has its roots in an old shepherds' track and was upgraded in the 1930s (1934 to 1939) under King Carol II.
The road is open only seasonally and only in daylight, and it can be closed in bad weather. In 2026 it opened on 29 May, and in 2025 it closed on 20 October (as of October 2026). A speed limit of 30 km/h and a weight limit of 3.5 t apply (as of October 2026), so the route is unsuitable for most larger motorhomes. Allow at least three hours for the whole route, check the current road conditions before setting off and bring warm clothing.
