Škocjan Caves

A UNESCO cave system where the Reka river roars through an underground canyon crossed by a bridge high above the water. Visits are guided only and take about two hours; bring a jacket and good shoes.
The Škocjan Caves in Slovenia's Karst region have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Here the Reka river disappears underground and flows on for about 34 km before resurfacing near Monfalcone. The underground canyon is among the largest in Europe; the route crosses the Cerkvenik Bridge, high above the riverbed.
The caves can only be visited on a guided tour. The main tour takes 2.5 to 3 hours and covers about 5 km and some 1,000 steps; a shorter option of about 3 km is available. It is 12 °C underground, so wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing. As part of the route runs above ground, an umbrella can come in handy. Photography is not allowed in the cave. Tours are offered in Slovenian, English, Italian and German.
