Bourscheid Castle

Bourscheid, Luxembourg

History

One of the largest castle ruins in Luxembourg, on a spur above a bend of the Sûre with wide views over wooded hills. Paid entry, audio guides; parking below the walls.

Bourscheid Castle probably originated in the 10th century and was extended in the 14th and 15th centuries with a curtain wall and Gothic towers. It is regarded as the largest castle in Luxembourg and stands about 150 m above the Sûre on a steep rocky spur; its round towers are characteristic. The site has been owned by the state since 1972, which had it restored. In the evening the castle is floodlit, making it visible from afar.

An audio guide in seven languages, including German, takes you around the site in about 90 minutes; children’s versions are available in German, Luxembourgish, French, Dutch and English. The castle offers wide views over the Sûre valley. It is open all year, dogs on leads are welcome, and there is a small snack bar. A free car park with about 30 spaces is available at the castle on Schlasswee; alternatively you can get there by public transport, for example by bus to the “Beim Schlass” stop.
