The roofless towers and nave of a Benedictine abbey consecrated in 1067, standing in a landscaped park by the Seine. Allow an hour; the Mesnil-sous-Jumièges ferry crosses the river nearby for free.
Saint Philibert founded the abbey around 654. Its church, Notre-Dame, was consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror; the two west towers, about 46 m high, are among the finest examples of Norman Romanesque architecture. The complex was sold during the Revolution; in 1802 the new owner had the choir blown up, and the ruins served as a quarry until 1824. Today Jumièges is regarded as one of the most beautiful ruins in France.
Since 2007 the abbey has belonged to the Seine-Maritime département, and it lies within the Boucles de la Seine normande Regional Nature Park. A 15 ha English-style park with old trees surrounds the ruins. The 17th-century abbot's lodging holds changing exhibitions. Allow roughly one and a half to two and a half hours for a visit, depending on whether you join a guided tour and explore the park.
