The abbey church of Sainte-Foy in Conques stands on one of the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France”. It was begun in the 11th century and completed in the 12th century. Above the main portal, the tympanum shows the Last Judgement, probably carved in the early 12th century; Paradise is shown on the left and Hell on the right. The treasury museum houses the golden reliquary statue of Saint Foy (Sainte Foy), dating from the early Middle Ages and set with gemstones and antique cameos.
Conques is a small medieval village in a wooded valley, with remains of its fortifications, gates and partly cobbled narrow lanes. The church is free to enter; the treasury museum has fixed opening hours, which you should check in advance. The lanes are best explored on foot.
