Tunnel of Trees (M-119)

A narrow, winding road under a canopy of hardwoods on the bluff above Lake Michigan. There is no center line; big RVs should skip it.
M-119 follows the shore of Lake Michigan; its northern stretch between Harbor Springs and Cross Village (a little over 30 km / 20 miles) is known as the "Tunnel of Trees" and has been designated a Scenic Heritage Route and part of the Pure Michigan Byways since 1979. The road winds through oaks, maples, birches and cedars whose crowns form a dense canopy. The whole of M-119 is about 44 km (27.5 miles) long, from Bay View to Cross Village. In the north there is mostly no center line. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) says M-119 is "not a road for those in a hurry." Good Hart and Cross Village lie along the way.
The road is narrow and poorly suited to large RVs. Fall foliage is a big draw. Please note: after flood damage, two sections are closed, one near Division Road until summer 2027 at the earliest estimate and one at Devil's Elbow with no firm timeline; detours are signed (as of September 2026). Check current conditions before you go.
