Mount Kineo
Rockwood, ME
A sheer rhyolite cliff rising from Moosehead Lake. A shuttle boat from Rockwood crosses in minutes to trails to the summit fire tower.
Mount Kineo juts into Moosehead Lake as a peninsula and can be reached only by boat from Rockwood. Depending on the source, the crossing takes 5 to 15 minutes; the shuttle usually runs from late May to early October, so check the current schedule before you go. The southeast face drops steeply about 210 m (700 feet), shaped by the ice of the last glaciation. The summit stands at 545 m (1,789 feet). The rock is rhyolite, which Native Americans quarried here to make tools.
The trail network totals 6.1 miles (9.8 km). The Indian Trail (0.9 mile) is the steepest route, the Bridle Trail (1.1 miles) is easier, and the Carriage Trail (2.2 miles each way) runs level along the shore. A former fire tower at the summit offers views across the lake. There are no restrooms in the park, but you will find them at the golf course; otherwise there are no services. Pay the ferry in cash. Children 10 and under must wear life jackets on board.
