Neptune’s Grotto

A sea cave of lakes and stalactites at the foot of Capo Caccia, reached by 654 steps down the cliff or by boat from Alghero. Closed when the sea is rough.
Neptune's Grotto lies in the cliffs of Capo Caccia near Alghero in Sardinia. The cave system is estimated to be about 4 km long, of which around 300 m is open to the public. Inside, the route passes stalactites and stalagmites, and there is a saltwater lake about 120 m long. The cave was discovered by fishermen in the 18th century.
You reach the entrance either by the Escala del Cabirol, a staircase of 654 steps cut into the cliff in the 1950s, or by boat from Alghero harbour. The guided tour inside the cave lasts about 30 minutes; allow another 15 to 20 minutes each way for the staircase. As the entrance is only about 1 m above the sea, the cave can be visited only when the sea is calm, so check before you go. We recommend visiting in the morning, when it is still cooler. You can park in front of the land entrance at Capo Caccia.
