Avenue of the Giants

A 31-mile road through old-growth coast redwoods in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, running parallel to US-101.
The Avenue of the Giants is officially State Route 254 and was part of US Highway 101 until 1960, when a freeway bypassed it. For about 51 km (31 miles) it follows the Eel River through Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the towns of Phillipsville, Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott, Redcrest and Pepperwood. Well-known groves include Founders Grove, with the roughly 105 m (346 ft) Founders Tree and the Dyerville Giant, which fell in 1991, as well as Rockefeller Forest.
Several interchanges link the road with US 101, so you can also drive just part of it. The route is suitable for most vehicles, including RVs. About 3 km (2 miles) south of Weott, the park visitor center has natural history exhibits. Along the way, picnic areas, short trails and river swimming spots invite you to stop. The Shrine Drive-Thru Tree in Myers Flat is privately owned and charges a separate fee.
