Abingdon Historic District

Abingdon, VA

History

A small Appalachian town of brick storefronts, a historic theatre and a well-known Virginia Creeper Trail trailhead. Walk Main Street, then rent a bike for the gentle rail trail through the woods.

Abingdon in southwestern Virginia lies at an elevation of 636 meters (2,087 feet) and is the county seat of Washington County. The settlement began as Black's Fort and was incorporated in 1778; where the name comes from is disputed. The historic town center has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970 and includes buildings from the late 18th to the mid-20th century. The Barter Theatre, opened in 1933, is the State Theatre of Virginia. The Martha Washington Inn incorporates the house built in 1832 for General Francis Preston.

The Virginia Creeper Trail ends in Abingdon; this converted railroad bed runs 55 km (34.3 miles) to Whitetop Mountain and is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Allow about one to two hours for a stroll along Main Street, and half a day to a full day for a bike ride on the trail.
