In-depth guide · CampingSpirit
Around 275 km through southern Tuscany: from Grosseto to the coast at Castiglione della Pescaia, through the Parco dell’Uccellina and Talamone to the Orbetello lagoon and Monte Argentario, then on to Capalbio and into the tuff country around Saturnia and Pitigliano.
The spirit of the route
The Maremma was for a long time marsh, grazing land of the butteri (the cowboys of Tuscany) and feared for malaria; today it is a coastal landscape of pines, cork oaks and macchia, where semi-wild Maremmana cattle and wild boar stand at the roadside. The motorhome rolls between olive groves and sunflower fields, and in the evening it smells of resin and salt. On the Orbetello lagoon flamingos stand in the shallows, on the Argentario villages such as Porto Ercole cling to steep rocks, and inland tuff gorges cut through the hills. In Saturnia 37 °C sulphur water bubbles over limestone sinter into pools, and Pitigliano sticks to a tuff plinth like a little Jerusalem. If you avoid the summer, you have the coast almost to yourself.
Stage-by-stage plan
1Stage 1: Grosseto to Castiglione della Pescaia (approx. 25 km)
- The drive
- From Grosseto on the SP158 across the plain to Castiglione della Pescaia, flat, about 35 minutes; in high summer there are tailbacks on the coast. The old town of Grosseto is a ZTL.
- Highlights & must-sees
- Grosseto: 16th-century city walls, cathedral and the Museo Archeologico e d’Arte della Maremma.
- Castiglione della Pescaia: harbour with castle and old town.
- Beach of Punta Ala and the pineta on the coastal plain.
- CampingSpirit overnight tip
-
Official campsite or RV park: Around Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia there are several campsites (for example Camping Village Cieloverde in Marina di Grosseto and Camping Rocchette near Castiglione; check opening beforehand); mostly open from spring to autumn, with electricity, sanitary facilities and waste disposal. Reserve in high summer.
Free camping or nature tip (where legal): On the Maremma coastal strip beach car parks and the pineta are strictly policed in summer; overnighting outside the sites is prohibited. In the shoulder season the same ordinances apply unless they have been lifted.
- Insider tip for campers
- In season Castiglione has a traffic-calmed old town; park on the edge and walk up. In high summer check in advance for parking tickets, as spaces are often taken quickly.
2Stage 2: Castiglione della Pescaia to Alberese (Parco dell’Uccellina) (approx. 35 km)
- The drive
- Via Grosseto on the provincial road to Alberese (no road crosses the Ombrone between Marina di Grosseto and Marina di Alberese). Flat, with a lot of farm traffic; about 45 minutes. The park’s visitor centre is in Alberese.
- Highlights & must-sees
- Parco Regionale della Maremma (Uccellina): hiking trails through macchia and pineta, from the Alberese visitor centre; access only with a ticket from the visitor centre; in summer (according to the park authority generally from the end of June, forest-fire protection) most routes can only be walked with a guide, so check beforehand.
- Marina di Alberese: beach with driftwood and views of the hills of the Uccellina.
- Torre della Bella Marsilia and San Rabano Abbey (hiking destination, on foot only, seasonal restrictions).
- CampingSpirit overnight tip
-
Official campsite or RV park: In Alberese and Marina di Alberese there are campsites and small pitches; selection and opening times change, so phone ahead. For a park visit Alberese is the most practical starting point.
Free camping or nature tip (where legal): In the Parco della Maremma overnighting outside designated sites is prohibited; in the car parks at the park entrances parking is intended for daytime only. Wild camping leads to fines.
- Insider tip for campers
- Access rules apply in the park: ticket at the Alberese visitor centre, in summer usually only a few routes without a guide, guided tours (for example to San Rabano Abbey) only with a reservation; in high season a shuttle usually runs to Marina di Alberese. Current information and reservations at parco-maremma.it. Bad weather and forest-fire risk in summer can lead to closures.
3Stage 3: Alberese to Orbetello (approx. 50 km)
- The drive
- On the SS1 Aurelia south as far as Albinia, then on the isthmus (Tombolo della Giannella) to Orbetello; Talamone with a detour on the way. The Aurelia is well made but heavily used; about 1 hour.
- Highlights & must-sees
- Talamone: harbour village with a rocca, a view of the bay and the Costa dell’Uccellina nature reserve.
- Laguna di Orbetello: flamingos, herons and waterfowl in the WWF reserve.

- CampingSpirit overnight tip
-
Official campsite or RV park: Around Orbetello there are campsites and aree di sosta, for example on the lagoon near Albinia and towards Feniglia; mostly open from spring to autumn. The selection changes, so check beforehand.
Free camping or nature tip (where legal): On the Giannella isthmus and in the Feniglia pineta overnighting and camping are prohibited; the nature reserves are supervised. Checks are made in the municipal car parks of Orbetello.
- Insider tip for campers
- The road between Albinia and Orbetello is flat, windy and heavily used in summer. The town centre of Orbetello has a ZTL; vehicles park on the edge by the lagoon. Buy fresh fish at the market before moving on.
4Stage 4: Orbetello to Porto Santo Stefano / Porto Ercole (Argentario) (approx. 35 km)
- The drive
- From the Tombolo della Giannella over the spit onto Monte Argentario; the Panoramica road around the mountain is narrow, winding and in places without crash barriers. For large motorhomes the road between Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano is only of limited suitability. About 1 hour for the circuit.
- Highlights & must-sees
- Porto Santo Stefano: fishing harbour with ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri.
- Porto Ercole: the fortresses of Forte Stella and Forte Filippo, harbour with yachts.
- Panoramica Argentario: scenic route with views of the tombolo beaches.
- CampingSpirit overnight tip
-
Official campsite or RV park: On the Argentario there are several campsites, mostly smaller and in places with terraced pitches; access roads are narrow, so large vehicles should register beforehand. Aree di sosta on the mountain are rare and demand is high – be sure to reserve in summer.
Free camping or nature tip (where legal): On Monte Argentario wild camping and overnighting in motorhomes in public car parks are practically ruled out; municipalities police this, and fines and towing are possible. The same applies on the tombolo beaches.
- Insider tip for campers
- Ferries to Giglio (including Toremar and Maregiglio) leave from Porto Santo Stefano; taking vehicles to Giglio is restricted for non-residents (often not possible in season) – better to leave the motorhome on the mainland and clarify beforehand with the shipping line and the municipality. Restrictions for long vehicles may apply on the Panoramica – follow the signs.
5Stage 5: Orbetello to Capalbio (approx. 35 km)
- The drive

Free camping or nature tip (where legal): On the beaches of Capalbio and Ansedonia parking and overnighting for motorhomes are prohibited or time-limited in summer; access roads to nature reserves are mostly closed.
- Insider tip for campers
- The Giardino dei Tarocchi is open only for part of the year; check opening times beforehand. In Capalbio wild boar (cinghiale) specialities are common; reserve in the main season.
6Stage 6: Capalbio to Saturnia (approx. 60 km)
- The drive
- From Capalbio via Manciano on the SR74 Maremmana to Saturnia. The road is well made but runs over hills; about 1 hour. In Manciano and Saturnia the roads through the towns are narrow.

Free camping or nature tip (where legal): At the Cascate del Mulino overnighting and camping are prohibited; motorhomes may only park nearby. Checks are made here too in season.
- Insider tip for campers
- The Cascate del Mulino are emptier early in the morning or in the evening; in summer there is a heavy rush. Sulphur water can tarnish silver jewellery – take jewellery off beforehand. The pools are slippery; bring sturdy bathing shoes.
7Stage 7: Saturnia to Pitigliano (approx. 35 km)
- The drive
- From Saturnia via Manciano and on the SR74 to Pitigliano; tuff roads with viewpoints, in places narrow, about 45 minutes. The old town of Pitigliano is tight, so park outside.

- Vie Cave near Sovana and Sorano: Etruscan sunken roads in the tuff, check hiking conditions beforehand.
- Sovana: village with a cathedral and Etruscan tombs.
- CampingSpirit overnight tip
-
Official campsite or RV park: Around Pitigliano and Sorano there are aree di sosta and agriturismi with pitches; selection and opening change, so check beforehand. A pitch on the edge of the old town spares you the narrow lanes.
Free camping or nature tip (where legal): In the old town of Pitigliano and on the Vie Cave overnighting is not provided for; nature protection applies in the tuff gorges. In car parks on the edge it is in places tolerated, but without camping behaviour.
- Insider tip for campers
- The Vie Cave can in places only be walked in hiking boots and are slippery in winter; check the municipalities’ information beforehand. Pitigliano is known for white wine and Jewish pastries – buy them at the bakery in the old town.
Camping practice & local rules
Wild camping & overnight parking
- Italian law (Codice della Strada, Art. 185) distinguishes parking (“sosta”) from camping (“campeggio”): a motorhome may stand and overnight wherever parking is allowed, as long as it touches the ground only with its wheels. Chairs, tables, awning, stabilisers, wedges and drained grey water are prohibited; municipal ordinances and signs (“divieto di sosta camper”) take precedence.
- In the Maremma and on the Argentario the municipalities impose strict bans in summer: beach car parks, the Feniglia pineta and the Giannella isthmus are off limits for motorhomes. Fines and towing are possible; checks are regular.
- Protected areas (national parks, reserves, Natura 2000 zones) have their own rules set by their authorities; do not camp on spec outside designated sites, but ask the park or municipality beforehand. This applies to the Parco della Maremma, the nature reserves of the Orbetello lagoon and the Feniglia pineta.
- Useful apps: park4night, CamperOnline (Italian, with up-to-date user reports) and Campercontact; check the current status of aree di sosta beforehand, as many small sites change fees and opening times.
Waste disposal & supplies
- Fresh water and waste disposal is called “camper service” or “carico e scarico”. Most aree attrezzate have a station, often with a token or coins; campsites usually let passing travellers dispose of waste for a fee.
- Empty grey water and the cassette only at the station; wild dumping is a main reason for new motorhome bans in municipalities.
- Tap water in Italy is usually drinkable; look for “acqua potabile”; in high summer there can be local restrictions – fill the tank before mountain and coastal stages.
- Gas: German exchange cylinders are not exchanged in Italy. Refillable cylinders and gas tanks are filled at GPL filling stations with the Italian adapter; often only the staff do the filling. Arrive with two full cylinders.
Vehicle size & traffic rules
- Speed limits: motorhomes up to 3.5 t 90 km/h outside built-up areas, 110 km/h on expressways, 130 km/h on motorways; over 3.5 t 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 100 km/h on motorways. Caravan combinations: 70 km/h outside built-up areas, 80 km/h on motorways. Dipped headlights are required outside built-up areas even in daytime.
- ZTL exist in Grosseto, Orbetello and Porto Santo Stefano, Castiglione della Pescaia and in the old towns of Capalbio, Pitigliano and Sorano; cameras also record foreign number plates. On the Argentario Panoramica time restrictions are possible in season.
- Tolls: the SS1 Aurelia and the Grosseto–Siena expressway are toll-free; larger toll sections lie only north or south of the route. Ferries to Giglio leave from Porto Santo Stefano; taking vehicles is restricted for non-residents and limited seasonally.
- If a load projects beyond the rear, for example bikes on a rear carrier, the red-and-white warning panel (50 × 50 cm) is compulsory. Alcohol limit 0.5, for novice and professional drivers 0.0; mobile phone while driving only with a hands-free kit. Between 15 November and 15 April winter equipment (snow chains or winter tyres) may be required on many routes – follow the signs.
CampingSpirit packing & preparation checklist
- Hiking boots and a sun hat for the Parco dell’Uccellina: the hill paths are stony, with little shade and hot in summer.
- Bathing shoes for the Cascate del Mulino: the limestone-sinter pools are slippery.
- Binoculars for the flamingos and birds of the Orbetello lagoon.
- Insect and tick protection: ticks and mosquitoes are common in the Maremma macchia.
- Water canister (at least 20 l): in summer water is scarce on beaches and woodland pitches.
- Folding bike or e-bike for Grosseto, Orbetello and the coast road: the plain is flat.
As of 2026-09. Closures, fees and booking rules change: check official sources before you go.
