Route description
Start in Taihape, where the giant gumboot makes a quick photo stop, then follow SH1 south for about 25 km to Mangaweka and the old DC-3 on the cliff edge. The road follows the Rangitīkei River and has several bends. From Bulls, leave SH1 on SH3 and drive about 30 km to Palmerston North, where Te Manawa is a good indoor stop. Fuel and holiday parks are available here.
On day two, return to SH1 and drive south to Foxton, about 50 km away, where the De Molen windmill is beside the highway. Continue to Ōtaki and Paraparaumu on the Kāpiti Coast. The road is a mix of expressway and local road with 100 km/h limits, so keep left and watch the signs. Camp in a holiday park, and check any local freedom camping rules before you stop.
At Paraparaumu Beach, boats cross to Kāpiti Island, a nature reserve that needs a DOC permit and a licensed operator. Book weeks ahead and check sailing conditions. If you are not going on the island, spend the time at the beach or the car museum. The beach has a car park and cafes along the road. Weekend traffic can be heavy, and the sailings depend on wind and tide.
The final leg runs about 55 km on SH1 through Pukerua Bay and Porirua into Wellington. The road has wide curves and fast traffic, so give yourself time. Use the car parks near the waterfront for Te Papa. For the ferry to Picton, book Interislander or Bluebridge ahead, arrive early at the terminal and check the current sailings, since schedules have changed in recent years.
