Route description

Begin at Monemvasia, then head for Elafonisos, reached by the short ferry from Pounta; check the current timetable, as services are thinner outside summer, and book if you take a vehicle. Simos has two sandy bays separated by a narrow spit, with shallow turquoise water and dunes backed by sea cedar. Stay on the marked paths to protect the dunes.

Return to the mainland and go inland to Sparta, where the acropolis hill holds a large Roman-era theatre said to seat 16,000 and the remains of the Temple of Athena Chalkioikos. Little of the classical city survives, so expect ruins rather than monuments. Mystras, the Byzantine hill town, lies only a short drive west and pairs naturally with Sparta.

Cross to the Laconian Gulf at Gythio, once the port of ancient Sparta, with the islet of Marathonisi linked by a causeway and Mavrovouni beach, over four kilometres long, south of town. Then continue into the Mani to Vathia, a largely abandoned hilltop village of fortress-like tower houses. You need a car; about an hour is enough.

At the tip of the peninsula, Cape Tainaron is the southernmost point of mainland Greece, with a lighthouse and a chapel built partly from an ancient temple of Poseidon. The walk from Porto Sternes takes about 50 minutes without shade, so go early with plenty of water. Nearby are the Diros caves and Areopoli.

Finish up the west coast at Kardamyli, mentioned in Homer’s Iliad, where the Viros Gorge trail begins; the hike takes roughly four to six hours and spring is best, since the gorge is dry in summer and dangerous in winter floods. Kalamata, the end of the loop, is the nearest large town. Village roads are narrow for motorhomes; for wild camping, check local rules.
