Route description
Day 1: Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, about 540 km. The road runs north through Pimba, from where the Woomera rocket-range museum is a short detour, then past salt lakes to the opal town. Fuel is available at Glendambo and Pimba; do not rely on remote stops after dark. Heat in summer can exceed 40 degrees, so travel early and carry water.
Days 2 and 3: Coober Pedy to Alice Springs, about 690 km. Spend a morning underground in the Old Timers Mine or the dugout churches before leaving; the town is cool inside whatever the weather. The next fuel stops include Cadney Park, Marla and Kulgera at the Northern Territory border, where signposted limits reach 130 km/h on much of the Territory section. Many drivers split the day at Marla or Kulgera.
Days 4 and 5: Alice Springs to Tennant Creek, about 500 km. Visit the Telegraph Station for the town's origins, then drive north to Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles, around 100 km south of Tennant Creek, for the best light at sunrise or sunset. Wycliffe Well is a quirky roadhouse nearby. Fuel at Barrow Creek and Wycliffe Well; kangaroos and cattle are hazards at dusk.
Days 6 to 8: Tennant Creek to Darwin, about 1,000 km. Daly Waters Pub, about 450 km north, is a classic overnight stop. Mataranka's thermal pool is the next reward, then Katherine for Nitmiluk Gorge and the hot springs; Darwin is about 320 km further. In the Top End, crocodile warnings apply to most waterways and the wet season, roughly November to April, can cut side roads.
