Before you go

  • The Vršič Pass is the highest road pass in Slovenia at 1,611 m. It has 50 hairpin bends, paved with setts. Upper sections are impassable for much of winter.
  • Triglav National Park covers about 840 km². Camping and overnight stays outside designated areas are not allowed, and open fires are banned except at designated places.
  • Lake Bled is 2,120 m long and up to 29.5 m deep, with an island church and a castle. Weekends and summer bring crowds, so plan arrival and parking.

The drive

The Vršič Pass links Kranjska Gora with the Soča valley. The road was built in 1915–1917 by Russian prisoners of war, and the Russian chapel stands at about 1,200 m on the north side. Check current limits for long and heavy vehicles with the road authority before you start. Heavy snow closes the upper road for much of the winter, so confirm conditions in the shoulder seasons.

Camping and planning

Triglav National Park has information centres in Bled, Bohinj and Trenta and publishes a code of conduct, a visitor guide and current conditions. According to its visitor guidelines, camping and overnight stays outside designated areas are not allowed, motor vehicles may not be driven, stopped or parked in the natural environment, and open fires are banned except at designated places. Lake Bled sits about 35 km from Ljubljana airport. Wooden pletna boats carry visitors to the island.
