Before you go
- The summit walk is not technical, but weather turns quickly: carry waterproofs, sun protection and layers even in summer.
- Snow chains must be carried in the park in winter, and roads can close in heavy snow.
- Jindabyne is the main base for supplies, while Thredbo and Charlotte Pass serve the high country.
Climbing Mount Kosciuszko
There are two common routes in summer. From Thredbo, the chairlift shortens the walk to about 13 km return. From Charlotte Pass, the walk is about 18 km return and passes alpine lakes and wildflowers. Both finish on a gently graded track, and the weather can change within an hour.
Winter and the ski fields
The ski season runs roughly from June to early October. Thredbo and Perisher are the major resorts, and the roads to them are busy on weekends. Check road conditions, carry chains, and expect cold nights even in the shoulder seasons.
Beyond the main range
The park is much larger than the summit area. Yarrangobilly Caves and its thermal pool lie in the north, near the Snowy Mountains Highway. Distances between fuel stops can be long, and mobile coverage is patchy, so plan routes in advance.
FAQs
Do I need a permit to climb Mount Kosciuszko?
No special climbing permit is needed for the standard walks, but a park entry pass applies to vehicles in the park. Check current rules with the park authority before you travel.
When is the best time to visit?
December to March is best for hiking, with wildflowers usually peaking around January. June to September is the snow season. Autumn is quiet, but snow can fall outside winter.
